Glossy Shine: How a Stone Polishing Job Changed the Look of This Marble Floor in Dunwoody, Georgia
January 26, 2017
Recently, we were called to do an evaluation and provide an estimate for a stone polishing job in Dunwoody, Georgia. The owners of the house heard about us from their neighbors, who had hired our services to clean and seal their entire home's floors. The Dunwoody residents were looking for a professional hard surface restoration company that could help them improve the look of their marble floor.Their beautiful home – located in an upscale neighborhood – was nearly perfect, except for one thing. The foyer's marble floor was worn down and dull due to years of foot traffic and had some etch marks caused by improper maintenance. The foyer had a grand piano that the homeowners played exceptionally well, making it one of their favorite gathering areas for family reunions and parties. This was also the area where the homeowners made toasts and where they sang Happy Birthday and many other songs during special celebrations. It had suffered from years of heavy foot traffic and never had any type of professional maintenance performed. On the day of the evaluation, we took a look at the area and immediately knew what needed to be done to bring that beautiful marble floor's glossy shine back.
It is not uncommon for people to think that stone surfaces – such as marble – don't need special care, but nothing could be further from the truth. Marble is a relatively soft stone. On the Mohs Scale of mineral hardness – where 1 is the softest mineral and 10 is the hardest – marble is about a three out of ten since it's mainly composed of calcite. This mineral reacts with certain substances that can corrode the stone, making it look as if it were stained; this is known as etching in the hard surface restoration business, and it can make an otherwise beautiful stone surface look dull and stained. This is especially true for areas with high foot traffic, such as the kitchen, the bathroom, and the foyer.
The first step to renewing the floor was a stone honing process to remove any scratches, etches, or stains that the floor had. This process consists of using low grit compounds to smooth the surface. After that, we used a combination of higher grit compounds and abrasive materials and powders to bring out the stone's luster, giving the floor that glossy, almost mirror-like finish. The homeowners wanted a shiny floor, and that's exactly what they got.
They were stunned by the job we did, and they vowed to never let the beautiful marble floor get in that state again. To prevent their foyer's floor from becoming dull and stained again, they decided to hire our maintenance service. So, we will be seeing them every other year or so for a polishing maintenance service. Although our processes are designed to be durable and are quite easy to maintain, stone surfaces may require a periodic, deep maintenance plan to ensure that they remain looking their best. With our maintenance plans, we can help homeowners prevent the most common problems that damage stone surfaces.
If you have a marble floor, wall, countertop, vanity top, or shower that has become etched or has lost its shine and beauty, it is time for a stone honing and polishing service.
